2004 Zoom Magazine Four, Six and Rotary Nationals - Adelaide Raceway 14/02/04

Event Report and Pictures: Ben Winstone

If there was one word to describe this years four, six and rotary nationals event held at Adelaide it would have to be HOT!

With temperatures hitting the forty-degree mark in the morning leading to around 45 degrees in the afternoon, the conditions were certainly far from ideal for drag racing. In fact the track temp reached anywhere between 74 and 78 degrees depending on who you were listening to. This meant that there was simply not enough grip for the higher-powered cars to run quick times.

The event always attracts its fair share of interstate entrants and this year was no different with racers coming from Queensland and Victoria to be part of the action.

Rotorworx are always popular at the event and this year turned up with a number of cars on the transporter. However it was not smooth sailing for some of the cars. Simon's FREKNU RX-7 was one of the first cars onto the track and unfortunately suffered clutch problems doing its first burnout and was put back on the trailer for the rest of the weekend. Harvey's ITUFRX RX-3 was in a similar situation, breaking the gearbox in its first burnout attempt and battled it out in the heat changing the box and returned late in the night for a match-race against Matt's EZYTEN 1300, running a 9.9-second pass. The EZYTEN 1300 ran a best of 10.53 at 130.26mph, with conditions not allowing it to dip into the nines, while Marty's ETAV8 RX-4 ran a 9.84 at 142.18mph, not far off its best time, but was knocked out of eliminations later on in the night. Dave McPherson's Corolla was another car suffering from the effects of the heat and ran a best time of 8.93 @ 153.92mph later in the night, with the guys thinking that it ran much faster than that, this time was only one-tenth off the fastest for the weekend, which was a 8.80.

Mazfix made the long trip down from Queensland, bringing three tough cars, including their Beretta drag car. The drag car reportedly ran a 1.08 60-foot time with a best time for the event of 8.80 backing off in the top end with a MPH reading of 110.34, on another pass against Dave's Corolla, Archie crossed the centre lane. Craig's 20B powered RX-3 sounded tough and had some traction problems and ran a 11.02 at 137.29mph, while the Bushpig Cortina also looked strong running a 9.40 at 135.39mph, equaling its previous best.

Grant Williams had his Ford Probe out and ran the equal fastest time of the event (with the Mazfix Beretta) with an 8.80 at 159.74mph in eliminations later on in the evening, before going on to win the event, while runner-up Ben Seidel in the ex-Maztech 20B RX-3 coupe ran a 9.15 at 144.32mph.

Promaz were also out competing, this year with Pav's IGNITE RX-4, running a 9.88 at 138.97mph, while Simon's HERRX3 RX-3 coupe ran a 10.75 at 133.53mph, both cars are using autos.

Dalton Automotive had their Series 6 RX-7 out and had a good run against Grant Williams later in the day, running a 8.81 at 145.72mph, Paul Pfeiffer's first-gen RX-7 drag car was also competing and he ran a best time for the weekend of 9.44 at 155.54mph.

The yellow untubbed RX-2 sedan (not pictured) ran an impressive 9.75 at 142.26mph, while the red RX-3 sedan ran a 10.91 at 127.94mph.

A number of tough ported rotors were competing, including the 1200 coupe which ran into the 12s, as well as the nicely turned out red RX-3 coupe.

There were a couple of six cylinder entrants, with a small VL Turbo turnout this year, with just two competing. The yellow BT-1 PANNIC, prepared by Bresciani Racing ran a best of 9.52 @ 145mph, while Vas' JPC VL had converter problems and couldn't complete a full power pass. Keir Wilson's silver R32 GT-R sounded tough, and ran a 9.53 at 148.05mph, while Andrew Sander's Centura (not pictured) ran a 9.35 at 148.05mph. The tough looking S15 200SX ran into the elevens at 130mph.

If it wasn't for the extreme heat and breakages, the event would have been full of great racing and no doubt some quick numbers would have been run. However you cannot control these things, and lets hope that in 2005 conditions will be more favourable.
